Nordic Pumpkin Pendant Light

The shade on this pendant takes its shape from a pumpkin, with soft vertical ribbing running around a rounded glass body, finished with a smooth spherical accent. It is a playful form handled with restraint, which is what keeps it from tipping into novelty: the silhouette is recognisable, the execution is clean, and it sits comfortably in a room styled around Nordic minimalism rather than fighting it. The glass is the working part of the design. Because the shade is glass rather than opaque metal, light passes through the body as well as out of the opening, so the shade glows and the ribbing catches the light along its ridges instead of casting a hard-edged cone straight down. That produces a soft, warm pool of illumination and a fixture that looks lit rather than merely bright, which is the reason to hang a glass pendant where people will actually see it: over a dining table, above a kitchen island, in a hallway, or beside a bed where a pendant frees up the table surface a lamp would otherwise occupy. The three-head version is a horizontal bar 65 centimetres long by 22 tall and only 6 deep, and it does an entirely different job. That linear form is designed to run along the length of something, most obviously a rectangular dining table or a kitchen island, spreading light evenly down its length instead of concentrating it in the middle. If you have ever tried to work out how to light a long dining table properly without hanging three separate pendants and getting the spacing slightly wrong, that is precisely the problem the bar version solves, and it arrives already correctly spaced. Wiring one fixture is also considerably less work than wiring three, and the spacing cannot drift out of true over time the way three independent pendants can.

The cord is adjustable up to 1.5 metres, so the drop is set properly at installation rather than accepted as it comes. That is worth taking care over. Above a dining table the usual guidance is roughly 75 to 90 centimetres from the tabletop, which keeps sightlines clear across the table while still lighting it rather than the ceiling; over an island you can go a little lower, and in a hallway you simply need clearance for the tallest person walking through. The fixture takes G9 LED bulbs and runs on 110 to 240 volts, which covers essentially any domestic supply anywhere in the world without an adapter or a transformer. Four finishes are offered, in beige, green, red and chrome, and that choice is worth making deliberately: beige and chrome recede into a room, while green and red make the pendant a feature rather than a fitting. Installation is a hardwired ceiling connection, straightforward if you are confident with mains wiring and a short job for an electrician if you are not. Getting the drop right while the fitting is up saves taking the whole thing down a week later when it turns out to hang awkwardly low over the table.
