Tinted Glass Pendant Light

Tinted glass changes what a pendant does to a room, and it does so more than any other single decision about a hanging light. A clear shade puts the bulb on display and throws hard highlights; an opaque shade hides the source entirely and aims the light straight down. Tinted glass sits between the two: light passes through the coloured body of the shade as well as spilling from the opening, so the shade itself glows softly and casts a faint colour into the surrounding space rather than delivering a bright white cone. That is the difference between a pendant that lights a surface and one that changes the character of a room after dark. It also means the fixture works during the day, since a tinted shade has visible depth in daylight where a clear one is close to invisible and a white one reads as a blank shape. Hung at eye level above a table, a counter or a hallway console, a pendant is looked at as much as it is looked by, so the shade doing something interesting when the light is off is worth quite as much as what it does when the light is on and the room is dark.

Two shade colours are offered, in smoke grey and rust, and they are genuinely different propositions rather than variations of the same idea. Smoke grey is the restrained option: it cuts the brightness slightly, casts almost no colour into the room, and reads as a contemporary, slightly industrial choice that sits comfortably against black metalwork, cool paint colours and stone. Rust is the warm and assertive one, throwing a soft amber cast onto the surfaces around it and pulling the whole room towards a warmer register in the evening; it suits timber, brick, terracotta and deeper paint, and it is the choice if you want the pendant to set the mood rather than simply provide light. Worth considering is what the light lands on rather than what the shade sits against, since a tinted pendant colours the table beneath it before it colours anything else. The bulb takes a standard E27 screw fitting and is not included, which is an advantage rather than an omission: you choose the warmth, the brightness and whether it dims, replacements cost very little, and a decorative filament bulb is well worth considering here, since the tinted shade allows a partial view of the source and a plain frosted bulb wastes that.

The drop is adjustable, so the height should be set at installation rather than accepted as it arrives, because correcting it afterwards means taking the whole fixture down again. Above a dining table, roughly seventy-five to ninety centimetres of clearance from the tabletop keeps sightlines open across the table while still putting light where you eat rather than across the ceiling. Over a kitchen island you can hang a little lower, since nobody sits facing across it, and in a hallway the only real constraint is head clearance. Over a long table or a wide island, two or three hung in a run distribute light far better than a single fixture stranded in the middle, and they usually look more deliberate as well. If dimming matters, buy a dimmable LED and check the switch on the circuit before assuming it will work, since an older dimmer designed for incandescent bulbs will often make an LED flicker or buzz rather than dim cleanly. Installation is a standard hardwired ceiling connection, straightforward for anyone comfortable with mains wiring and short work for an electrician otherwise. Care is a dry or barely damp cloth; ammonia-based glass cleaners are worth avoiding around the metalwork.
