Crystal Wall Light

This wall sconce is built from cut crystal prisms held in a stainless steel frame, and the reason to choose it over a plain shaded fitting is what the crystal does to the light. A prism refracts light rather than simply diffusing it: light entering the crystal is bent and split apart, so instead of a smooth even wash you get bright edges, points of sparkle and small scattered highlights thrown onto the surrounding wall. That is an effect you simply cannot get from fabric or frosted glass, and producing it is the entire point of choosing a crystal fitting over a conventional shaded one. It also means the sconce is doing something during the day as well as at night, since the prisms catch and break up daylight from a nearby window. Stainless steel is a particularly sensible frame material in this application, because it holds a bright finish indefinitely without tarnishing, which matters a great deal when the metal sits directly against clear crystal; a frame that dulls over time would undercut the whole effect it was chosen to support. It also means cleaning is straightforward, since a dust with a dry cloth is enough to keep both the metal and the crystal doing their job properly.

Two sizes are available and they suit noticeably different positions. The smaller measures 14 centimetres across by 30 tall, which is a slim vertical fitting well suited to flanking a bed, running along a hallway, or sitting either side of a mirror. The larger, at 21 by 45 centimetres, has real presence and works better as a single feature on a wall, beside a fireplace, or in a stairwell where the extra height reads properly from a distance. Two finishes are offered, black and gold. Black frames the crystal with contrast and reads as contemporary; gold is warmer and more traditionally luxurious, and it tints the light bouncing off the frame very slightly warmer, which suits a bedroom or a living room particularly well. The manufacturer suggests a room size of ten to fifteen square metres, which is a helpful figure because it tells you plainly this is ambient and decorative lighting. Used as one layer among several it works beautifully; expected to light a large room alone it will fall short. A pair on either side of a bed, or two or three spaced along a hallway, is the arrangement that suits it best and the one most people settle on.

The fitting takes two G9 bulbs, which are not included. That is more useful than it sounds, because the bulb you choose has more effect on a crystal fitting than on almost any other kind. A clear bulb produces the sharpest, most defined sparkle through the prisms; a frosted one softens the effect considerably. Colour temperature is yours to pick too, with warm around 2700K suiting a bedroom or living room and something cooler suiting a hallway. If you want dimming, buy dimmable G9 LEDs and pair them with an LED-compatible dimmer switch, since standard non-dimmable bulbs on an older dimmer will flicker or buzz rather than dimming smoothly through their range. It runs on 220 to 240 volts and carries an IP20 rating, which means indoor dry areas only: this is not suitable for a bathroom zone near a shower or bath, or anywhere outdoors. Installation is wall-mounted and hardwired, so it is a job for an electrician unless you are genuinely confident with mains wiring. Cleaning is a dust with a soft dry cloth, and it is worth doing occasionally, because dust settles on the upper faces of the prisms and dulls exactly the sparkle you bought the fitting for.
